A Message from Yiendhy Farrelly……

August 2018

Dear Parents/Guardians:

Here we go again! Opening day excitement! I hope you are enjoying your summer. We kicked off the summer by watching our Class of 2018 end their high school career in spectacular fashion, cheered on by staff, faculty, family and friends. We also celebrated the work and dedication of our 21 wonderful staff and faculty members who retired at the end of the school year. We wish our staff and faculty retirees, and our graduates, the best in all their future endeavors!

While we hope you are enjoying a wonderful summer, our administrators, clerical team, and buildings and grounds department have been busy preparing for the new school year. When students, staff and faculty return this September, they will notice new doors and door hardware at SHS and JFK, as well as new floor and ceiling tiles and paintwork in a number of second- and third-floor SHS classrooms. They will also notice updates to the SHS cafeteria and kitchens (A & B) and the JFK kitchen. In addition, we have addressed elementary playground equipment concerns. This summer, we also submitted capital project construction plans for Phase V (summer of 2019) to the State Education Department (SED). Phase V includes new parking lots, sidewalks and curbing, as well as new doors and corresponding door hardware at Santapogue and Forest Avenue elementary schools. Please visit our website,, to view pictures of our ongoing and completed facility upgrades.

We are still waiting to receive SED SMART Schools approval on our double-door vestibule system and one-button lockdown system. As soon as we receive approval, we will proceed with the installation. We are also working with the Suffolk County Department of Fire, Rescue and Emergency Services to enhance our district and building emergency systems.

On our website, you will find our Board of Education, district and superintendent goals, as well as our district strategic plan. Our Board, administrators, staff and faculty members are committed to these goals and action plans, which will enhance curriculum, instruction, student outcomes, facilities and our overall environment.

This summer, extended school year students were actively engaged in enriching experiences at Tooker Avenue. The ESL tech camp and Camp Invention were huge successes! I look forward to working collaboratively with all to continue to promote and support a culture of academic, social and emotional excellence for ALL stakeholders.

As you know, I love to highlight our students, promote their accomplishments and share all the wonderful things occurring in our schools. I’d like to start off the school year by flooding our school district social media with pictures of opening day smiles and excitement! Please send your back-to-school student and family pictures to We will post them on the district’s website, Facebook and Twitter pages!

If, at any point throughout the school year, you have any questions or concerns regarding your child’s progress, the programs in your school, school district policies, procedures and/or district offerings, please reach out to the appropriate staff or faculty member. Below please find the chain of command for your review. Corresponding phone numbers may be found on our district website and in the district calendar.

I hope you continue to have a relaxing and enjoyable summer. I look forward to seeing your child(ren) on opening day, September 5, and celebrating their success throughout the school year!

Yours truly,
